Short answer
Research suggests EAAs may support muscle protein synthesis after a dose, in young and older adults, and small trials in older people found gains in lean body mass over weeks to months. Evidence for strength, recovery, fat loss or energy is limited or mixed. Most studies were short, small, and some were industry-linked.
The findings, ranked by strength of evidence
1. Muscle protein synthesis: consistent in short studies
Drinks of EAAs raise the rate at which muscles build protein for a few hours. This has been shown at rest in healthy volunteers with 13.4 g of EAAs (Tipton 1999), after exercise (Tipton 1999), and in older adults (Volpi 2003). With 20 g of EAAs after leg exercise, the response was similar in young and older men but came later in the older group (Drummond 2008). These are lab measurements over hours, not changes in muscle you can see.
2. Lean body mass in older adults: small trials, positive
In a placebo-controlled trial, older women taking 15 g of EAAs a day for 3 months gained lean body mass; strength did not change (Dillon 2009). In another study, 12 older adults took 11 g of EAAs plus arginine twice daily for 16 weeks and lean mass, leg strength and walking speed improved compared with their own baseline, with no placebo group (Børsheim 2008). More in EAAs for older adults.
3. Muscle function during bed rest: suggestive
Older adults given 15 g of EAAs three times a day during 10 days of bed rest showed signs of better preserved muscle function than a placebo group (Ferrando 2010). Groups were small and unevenly balanced, which the authors adjusted for.
4. Leucine content: a lever, mainly with age
In older adults, an EAA mix with 41% leucine raised muscle protein synthesis while one with 26% leucine did not; in young adults both worked (Katsanos 2006). A systematic review found most support for the "leucine trigger" idea in older adults and with isolated proteins (Zaromskyte 2021).
What the evidence does not show
- Bigger muscles from EAAs alone. No study we found shows EAA supplements outperform enough total protein from food plus training.
- Fat loss. No direct evidence.
- Better results than whey for most people. Short per-gram comparisons exist (Park 2020), but long-term head-to-head trials in healthy adults are scarce. See EAA vs whey.
Questions people ask
Do EAAs help build muscle?
They may support it. EAAs raise muscle protein synthesis in short studies, and small trials in older adults found increases in lean body mass. For building muscle, total daily protein and resistance training matter most.
Do EAAs help with recovery?
The idea is plausible because muscle repair needs protein, but direct evidence that EAA supplements speed recovery or reduce soreness in healthy people is limited.
Do EAAs help with weight loss?
There is no good evidence that EAAs cause fat loss. They can help people get essential amino acids with few calories while dieting, which the ISSN notes matters for keeping lean mass during calorie deficits.
Do EAAs give you energy?
Not by themselves beyond their small calorie content. Products sold for energy usually add caffeine. Check the label.
