Short answer
Research in older adults suggests EAAs may support muscle protein synthesis, especially when the mix is rich in leucine, and small trials found gains in lean body mass over 3 to 4 months. EAAs are compact and low in calories, useful when appetite is small. Check with your doctor first, especially if you take medication or have kidney or liver concerns.
Why age changes the picture
After exercise and 20 g of EAAs, muscle protein synthesis rose in both young and older men, but in older men it came later (Drummond 2008). In older adults, essential amino acids appear to be what drives the response: 18 g of EAAs matched 40 g of mixed amino acids (Volpi 2003).
What trials in older adults found
EAA trials in older adults
| Study | People | What they took | What changed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Katsanos 2006 | Older and young adults | 6.7 g EAAs, 26% or 41% leucine | Older adults responded only to the higher leucine mix |
| Dillon 2009 | 14 older women | 15 g EAAs a day or placebo, 3 months | Lean mass up with EAAs; strength unchanged |
| Børsheim 2008 | 12 older adults | 11 g EAAs plus arginine twice daily, 16 weeks | Lean mass, strength and walking speed up vs baseline (no placebo) |
| Ferrando 2010 | 22 older adults on bed rest | 15 g EAAs three times daily or placebo, 10 days | Signs of better preserved muscle function |
These are small studies, several from the same research network, so read them as encouraging rather than settled.
Practical points
- Protein at each meal. Spreading protein across the day is the base (ISSN 2017).
- Look for leucine. Check the leucine line; the effective mix in one study was 41% leucine.
- Pair with movement. Resistance exercise and protein work together, per the ISSN.
- Easy to take. Unflavored powder mixes into juice or yogurt; tablets avoid taste but need several per dose. Powder vs capsules.
Questions people ask
Are EAAs good for seniors?
They may help older adults get essential amino acids when appetite is low. Small trials found lean mass gains. They work best alongside enough total protein and some resistance exercise, and a doctor should confirm they suit you.
How much EAA did studies give older adults?
Doses included 6.7 g once (acute), 11 g twice daily for 16 weeks, 15 g a day for 3 months, and 15 g three times daily during 10 days of bed rest.
Why does leucine matter more with age?
In one study, an EAA mix with 26% leucine did not raise muscle protein synthesis in older adults, but one with 41% leucine did. Younger adults responded to both.
Can EAAs replace meals?
No. EAAs provide amino acids but few calories and no other nutrients. They are a supplement to meals.
