Short answer
Women need the same nine essential amino acids as men, and nothing suggests women need a special "for women" EAA. The best direct evidence is a small trial in older women, where 15 g of EAAs a day for 3 months increased lean body mass versus placebo. If you are pregnant or nursing, talk to your doctor first.
What studies in women found
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 14 women around 68 years old took 15 g of EAAs a day or a placebo for 3 months. Lean body mass and resting muscle protein synthesis increased in the EAA group only. One-repetition maximum strength did not change in either group (Dillon 2009). It is small and in older women, so it does not show what happens in younger, active women.
In a mixed group of older adults (7 women, 5 men), 11 g of EAAs plus arginine twice a day for 16 weeks was followed by gains in lean mass, leg strength and walking speed versus their own baseline (Børsheim 2008).
Protein first
The ISSN suggests 1.4 to 2.0 g of protein per kg of body weight a day for most exercising people, and higher intakes may help keep lean mass during calorie deficits (ISSN 2017). For a 65 kg woman, 1.4 to 2.0 g per kg is about 91 to 130 g of protein a day. An EAA serving adds a few grams of high-quality amino acids with few calories, which can help on a diet.
Things to check first
- Pregnant, trying to conceive or nursing: talk to your doctor or midwife before any supplement.
- Caffeine: many flavored amino products add it. Check the label.
- Iron, thyroid or other medication: ask your pharmacist about timing with supplements.
- "For women" marketing: compare the panel, not the packaging. The amino acids are the same.
Choosing an EAA
Use the same checklist as everyone else: all nine listed with grams, leucine stated, no hidden blends. Read how to choose an EAA or try the EAA finder.

Questions people ask
Should women take EAAs?
Only if they help you meet your protein needs or fit your training. Women who eat enough protein from varied foods may not need them. A small trial in older women found lean mass gains with 15 g a day.
Are EAAs safe during pregnancy?
Supplements have not been studied for safety in pregnancy. Talk to your doctor or midwife before using one, and avoid products with caffeine or long additive lists.
Will EAAs make women bulky?
No supplement alone builds large muscles. Muscle growth depends on training, total protein and energy, and hormones. EAAs simply supply amino acids.
Do women need a different EAA dose?
Studies dose EAAs in grams, not by sex. The ISSN gives protein guidance per kg of body weight, so a smaller person needs less total protein.
